Walking through the mall or looking at a catalogue, you might see things like "Fifty Percent off ENTIRE STORE!!" or "Buy one, Get one SALE". You may also have seen something along these lines: "Made for real women with real bodies". Now, when I see those signs, my first thought is "Oh, a company that makes clothes for people over size 0. Maybe they'll have some nice things..." but lately I've been thinking on this whole "real" thing. What makes someone any less real then anybody else? Are the fashion models with their tiny waists and itsy-bitsy BMI's not real people? Does being imperfect in terms of weight or size or shape make you real? Who decides who's real and who isn't? Because the funny thing is, in the same catalogue I read an editor's note in which she announced that these clothes were meant for real women with real lives that aren't always perfect, the models were all thin women with perfectly sculpted abs. That doesn't really back up what the editor was saying. And yet those women are real. They're as real as me or you or the woman behind you in the grocery line. So shouldn't the sign say "For all women, of all shapes and sizes"? Marketing won't really like that, will they.Then maybe the clothing stores will just have to stick with "Whole Store 70% off!! Come while the SALE lasts!".
That would work.
I have thought about this as well. "Real women have curves!" they say. Well, skinny women are real too. Isn't God creative to give us so many different shapes?
